About the New South Wales Department of State and Regional Development



The Retail Tenancy Unit was set up as a requirement of the Retail Leases Act 1994 which is administered by the New South Wales Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD).

DSRD is the first point of contact within government for companies wishing to do business in Sydney and regional New South Wales (NSW).

DSRD works with businesses to save them time and money when establishing or expanding in NSW by:

  • offering tailored assistance to help them set up and grow in NSW
  • providing a wide range of business and investment information for international and local companies
  • assisting business to find new markets for their products and services
  • actively securing and sustaining investment
  • organising trade missions for NSW business to help them establish themselves in the international economy
  • delivering enterprise improvement programs that enhance international competitiveness
  • driving policy change to improve the business climate in NSW.


    DSRD encourages investment and sustainable economic development through a range of programs and initiatives managed by its five divisions.

    The industry division capitalises on the State's comparative advantages and works with business to develop key sectors of the NSW economy.

    The investment division promotes Sydney and NSW, one of the Asia Pacific's most competitive investment locations, and provides customised services to companies interested in establishing or expanding their base in the State.

    The policy and resources division develops the appropriate policy settings to provide a cost-effective and friendly climate for business in NSW.

    The regional development division works to build strong enterprises, industries and communities throughout regional NSW.

    The small business division assists small and medium-sized enterprises develop their skills in order to grow and export their products and services.
